Nikolai Baskakov (painter)

Nikolai Nikolaevich Baskakov (August 6, 1918 – October 13, 1993) was a prominent Russian Soviet painter, primarily known for his portraits, genre paintings, and landscapes. He was born in the village of Martyshkino, near Saint Petersburg.

Baskakov studied at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after Ilya Repin, graduating in 1939. His artistic career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the Soviet Army.

After the war, Baskakov returned to painting and became a member of the Leningrad Union of Artists. He developed a realistic style, often focusing on depicting everyday life and the working class. His portraits are particularly noteworthy for their psychological depth and realistic portrayal of the subjects.

Throughout his career, Baskakov participated in numerous art exhibitions, both in Russia and abroad. His works are held in major museums, including the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, and other regional museums.

Baskakov was recognized as an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation and a member of the Saint Petersburg Union of Artists. His legacy lies in his contributions to Soviet Realist painting and his ability to capture the spirit and character of his time. He died in Saint Petersburg in 1993.
