National Highway 34 (India)
National Highway 34 (NH 34) was a major National Highway in India that ran entirely within the state of West Bengal. It has been renumbered under a new numbering system adopted by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Former Route (Pre-Renumbering):
The former NH 34 originated from its junction with NH-2 (now NH 19) near Dalkhola and terminated at its junction with NH-35 (now NH 112) near Barasat. It passed through several important towns and cities in West Bengal, including Raiganj, Baharampur, Krishnanagar, and Ranaghat.
Importance:
NH 34 was a crucial north-south artery in West Bengal, facilitating the movement of goods and people across the state. It connected the northern part of the state with Kolkata and the southern districts, playing a significant role in trade and commerce. The highway was also important for connecting various agricultural regions and facilitating the transportation of produce to markets.
Renumbering:
As part of a nationwide rationalization of national highway numbers, the former NH 34 has been subsumed into several new national highways. Sections of the former NH 34 are now part of NH 12. Travelers should consult updated road maps and official government sources for the current national highway numbers and routes.
