Nasoni

Nasoni are public drinking fountains found in Rome, Italy. They are characterized by their simple, functional design, typically consisting of a cylindrical metal pillar with a curved spout. Water flows continuously from the spout, providing free drinking water to the public. The water is potable and sourced from the city's aqueducts.

The term "nasoni" translates to "big noses" in Romanesco dialect, a reference to the shape of the curved spout, which some find resembles a large nose. Nasoni are an integral part of Rome's urban landscape and have been a feature of the city since 1874 when the first fountains were installed by the mayor Luigi Pianciani. Their initial purpose was to provide a reliable and accessible source of drinking water for the growing population of Rome.

While the original nasoni were made of cast iron, many have since been replaced or updated with newer materials, though maintaining the same basic design. There are hundreds of nasoni located throughout Rome, making them a ubiquitous sight for both residents and tourists. They are more than just a source of drinking water; they represent a connection to the city's history and a symbol of public service. The continuous flow of water also helps to keep the water cool and fresh, even in the hot Roman summers.
