Mystical Seven (Wesleyan)
The Mystical Seven (also sometimes referred to as M7) is a secret society at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. Founded in 1837, it is one of the oldest secret societies in the United States. The organization's activities and membership are largely unknown to the general public, adding to its mystique.
Membership is traditionally composed of seven senior (fourth-year) students chosen each year from across various disciplines and social circles. The selection process is shrouded in secrecy.
While the specific aims and rituals of the Mystical Seven are confidential, historical evidence suggests a focus on intellectual discussion, social reform, and fostering bonds among its members. Alumni of the organization have often gone on to notable careers in fields such as politics, law, academia, and business.
The Mystical Seven has a long-standing, albeit subtle, presence on the Wesleyan campus, often expressed through anonymous gestures and symbols. Due to its clandestine nature, the society has been the subject of considerable speculation and folklore within the Wesleyan community. There have been periods of increased student and administrative scrutiny, particularly concerning the group's exclusivity and the potential influence wielded by its alumni.
