Myiornis

Myiornis is a genus of small tyrant-flycatchers in the family Tyrannidae. These birds are found in South America, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. They are characterized by their diminutive size, typically measuring less than 10 cm (4 inches) in length, making them among the smallest flycatchers.

The genus Myiornis currently includes the following species:

  • Ecuadorian Tyrannulet (Myiornis ecuadoriensis)
  • Black-capped Tyrannulet (Myiornis atricapillus)
  • Short-tailed Pygmy Tyrant (Myiornis ecaudatus)
  • White-bellied Pygmy Tyrant (Myiornis albiventris)

These birds typically inhabit humid forests, forest edges, and clearings with dense vegetation. Their diet consists mainly of small insects and other invertebrates, which they catch by sallying from perches. They build small, cup-shaped nests in trees or shrubs, often concealed amongst foliage.

The conservation status of Myiornis species varies, with some species considered to be of least concern while others may face threats from habitat loss and degradation. Further research is ongoing to better understand their ecology, distribution, and potential threats.
