Much (TV channel)
Much, originally known as MuchMusic, is a Canadian English-language specialty channel owned by Bell Media. Launched on August 31, 1984, it is one of Canada's first specialty channels and is primarily focused on music programming, particularly music videos and music-related news.
Historically, MuchMusic followed a format similar to MTV in the United States, featuring a rotating cast of video jockeys (VJs) who introduced music videos and conducted interviews with artists. The channel played a significant role in promoting Canadian musicians and introducing international artists to the Canadian audience. Over time, MuchMusic broadened its programming to include reality shows, teen dramas, comedies, and lifestyle programming, while still maintaining a focus on music.
MuchMusic's influence extends beyond its on-air programming. It has been influential in shaping Canadian popular culture and has launched the careers of numerous personalities in the Canadian entertainment industry. The channel has also been involved in organizing and promoting music events, such as the MuchMusic Video Awards (MMVAs), a major annual music awards show in Canada.
In recent years, MuchMusic has evolved to reflect changing media consumption habits, with a greater emphasis on digital content and social media engagement. While music videos remain a part of its programming, the channel also features curated playlists, online exclusives, and interactive content. The channel's name was shortened to Much in 2013. Despite changes in its programming focus, Much continues to be a significant player in the Canadian entertainment landscape.
