Mstyora (rural locality)

Mstyora is a rural locality (a selo, meaning village) in Vyaznikovsky District of Vladimir Oblast, Russia. It is located on the Klyazma River, approximately 32 kilometers northeast of Vyazniki, the administrative center of the district, and approximately 180 kilometers east of Moscow.

Mstyora is historically known as a center of traditional Russian folk arts and crafts. The most prominent of these is Mstyora miniature painting, a style of lacquer art that developed in the village in the early 20th century, evolving from the older tradition of icon painting. These miniatures, typically painted on papier-mâché boxes, depict scenes from Russian history, folklore, and daily life, using vibrant colors and intricate detail.

Besides miniature painting, Mstyora is also known for its embroidery and icon painting traditions, which predate the lacquer art. The village retains a number of historic buildings and structures, including churches and traditional wooden houses, reflecting its rich cultural heritage.

The economy of Mstyora is largely based on the production and sale of its traditional crafts, attracting tourists and collectors interested in Russian folk art. The village has workshops and schools dedicated to preserving and promoting these artistic skills.
