Morton Salt
Morton Salt is a prominent American food company best known for its production of table salt and road salt. Founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1848 as Richmond & Company, it was later renamed Morton Salt Company in 1910 after its president, Joy Morton.
The company is particularly famous for its iconic "Umbrella Girl" logo and slogan, "When it rains, it pours," which was first introduced in 1914. This marketing campaign was created to highlight the company's anti-caking agent, magnesium carbonate, which allowed the salt to flow freely even in humid conditions. The slogan and logo have become deeply ingrained in American popular culture and are instantly recognizable.
Morton Salt produces a wide variety of salt products for different uses, including table salt, sea salt, kosher salt, pickling salt, and water softening salt. In addition to salt, the company also produces and distributes other products, such as ice melt for winter road maintenance.
Over the years, Morton Salt has grown to become one of the largest salt producers in North America, with operations throughout the United States, Canada, and the Bahamas. The company has been involved in various community initiatives and sustainability efforts related to water conservation and environmental protection. Though ownership has changed hands several times, the Morton Salt brand continues to be a significant player in the salt industry.
