Jefferson College (Mississippi)

Jefferson College was a historic college located near Washington, Mississippi, established in 1802 and operating until 1964. It played a significant role in the early development of education in the Mississippi Territory and the subsequent state.

Founded on land donated by Spanish Governor Manuel Gayoso de Lemos, the college was named in honor of then-President Thomas Jefferson. While not officially affiliated with any particular religious denomination, it maintained a strong moral and academic focus.

Over its long history, Jefferson College served as a preparatory school, a college, and even a military academy at various points. Its curriculum focused on classical studies, mathematics, and languages. Notable figures who attended or were associated with Jefferson College include Confederate President Jefferson Davis (who attended but did not graduate), and several prominent politicians and civic leaders of the era.

After closing in 1964, the remaining campus and its grounds were transferred to the state of Mississippi. Today, the site is preserved as a Mississippi State Historic Site, offering visitors a glimpse into 19th-century education and life in the region. Historic buildings, including the West Wing Dormitory and the President's House, have been restored and are open for tours. The site also hosts historical reenactments and educational programs.
