Milagres Church (Mangalore)

Milagres Church, located in Mangalore, Karnataka, India, is one of the oldest and most prominent Roman Catholic churches in the city. Its history dates back to 1680 when a chapel was originally built on the site by Bishop Thomas de Castro, a Theatine missionary. This original structure was erected to commemorate a miracle that allegedly occurred during the suppression of Christians by Tippu Sultan.

Tippu Sultan destroyed the original chapel in 1784 as part of his campaign against the Christian community in the region. All Catholics were taken captive, and it was only after Tippu Sultan’s death in 1799 that Christians were able to return and rebuild the church.

The present church was built in 1811 by Bishop Thomas de Castro's grand nephew. It stands as a testament to the resilience of the Catholic community in Mangalore. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Miracles, and the annual feast of Our Lady of Miracles is a significant event that draws devotees from across the region.

The architecture of Milagres Church is notable for its Italian style. Over the years, the church has undergone renovations and expansions, maintaining its historical significance and spiritual importance. It is an important pilgrimage site and a symbol of the Catholic faith in coastal Karnataka.
