Max Mell

Max Mell (November 10, 1882 – December 12, 1971) was an Austrian writer, best known for his plays and poetry. He was born in Marburg an der Drau (now Maribor, Slovenia), then part of Austria-Hungary, and died in Vienna.

Mell studied German language and literature in Graz and Vienna. He initially worked as a teacher before dedicating himself to writing. His work is often characterized by its regional focus on Styria and its exploration of religious and philosophical themes, particularly within a Catholic framework. He frequently drew inspiration from folk traditions and local legends.

His best-known works include the play Das Apostelspiel (The Apostle Play), a mystery play first performed in 1923, and his poetry collections, which are noted for their lyrical beauty and evocative imagery. He also wrote novels and short stories.

Mell's work was admired by some for its artistic merit and cultural contribution, particularly its reflection of Austrian identity. However, his reputation is also marked by his association with National Socialism. He was a member of the Austrian Academy of Arts and a supporter of the Nazi regime, a fact that has led to considerable controversy surrounding his legacy and the interpretation of his works.
