Marcus Fabius Vibulanus (consul 442 BC)

Marcus Fabius Vibulanus was a Roman politician and general who served as consul in 442 BC. He belonged to the patrician gens Fabia, one of the most prominent and influential families in early Roman history. Details about his life and career are scarce and primarily derived from Livy's Ab Urbe Condita Libri.

During his consulship, Fabius Vibulanus shared the office with Postumius Aebutius Helva. Their term was marked by relative peace and a lack of significant military conflicts, although Livy mentions a minor dispute with the Aequi. The year 442 BC also saw continued internal tensions between the patricians and plebeians regarding land distribution and political rights. No major concessions were made to the plebeians during their consulship.

The cognomen Vibulanus was held by several members of the Fabia gens, and it is often difficult to distinguish between them due to the limited and sometimes contradictory historical records available for this early period of Roman history. The historical accuracy of the details provided by Livy, writing centuries later, is also subject to scholarly debate. Other members of the Fabii, bearing the Vibulanus cognomen, also held significant positions during the 5th century BC.
