Male (band)
Male was a punk rock band from Zagreb, Croatia, active from 1977 to 1981. Considered one of the pioneers of the punk rock movement in the former Yugoslavia, they were known for their raw, energetic performances and politically charged lyrics. The band's core members included Ivan "Piko" Stančić (drums), Željko Novak (bass), and Darko Rundek (vocals and guitar).
Male released a limited number of singles during their active period, but these recordings gained cult status and are highly regarded within the Croatian and ex-Yugoslavian punk scene. While they did not release a full-length studio album during their initial run, their music has been compiled and re-released posthumously on various compilations and archival recordings.
The band's music frequently addressed social and political issues prevalent in Yugoslavia at the time, often employing satirical and confrontational lyrics. Their live shows were characterized by a chaotic and rebellious atmosphere, contributing to their reputation as a significant force in the burgeoning punk scene.
After the band dissolved in 1981, Darko Rundek went on to achieve greater mainstream success with the band Haustor. The other members also remained active in various musical projects. Male's legacy continues to influence Croatian punk and alternative music.
