Machete (musical instrument)

The machete as a musical instrument refers primarily to a small, four-stringed guitar, also known as a braguinha. This instrument is a precursor to the ukulele and originates from Madeira, Portugal. It was brought to Hawaii by Madeiran immigrants in the late 19th century and played a significant role in the development of the ukulele's sound and popularity.

Typically, the machete is tuned D-G-B-D (from low to high), although other tunings exist. Its small size and bright, cheerful tone made it a popular folk instrument. It is characterized by a short scale length and a relatively high pitch. In Madeiran folk music, the machete is used to play both melody and accompaniment, often in fast-paced and energetic styles.
