Church Square (Columbus, Georgia)
Church Square is a small, historic public square located in downtown Columbus, Georgia. It is situated between 10th and 11th Streets, bounded by First Avenue and Broadway. Originally designated as one of the city's four original squares in the 1828 city plan, its primary function was to serve as a location for churches.
Historically, Church Square hosted several prominent religious institutions, lending the square its name. Over time, the churches relocated, and the square transitioned into more of a passive recreational space. Despite these changes, the name "Church Square" persisted.
Today, Church Square features green space, trees, benches, and walkways. It serves as a peaceful oasis in the bustling downtown area, providing a space for relaxation, lunch breaks, and small public gatherings. While no longer actively hosting churches, the name serves as a reminder of its initial purpose and historical significance within the city's development. The square is often included in walking tours of historic Columbus.
