LinkNYC
LinkNYC is a public Wi-Fi network and communication platform deployed throughout New York City. It replaces existing payphones with kiosks called "Links," which provide free, high-speed Wi-Fi, phone calls to anywhere in the United States, device charging, and access to city services and information.
The LinkNYC network is funded through advertising displayed on the kiosks' digital screens. This revenue model allows for the free services offered to the public.
The program aims to bridge the digital divide by providing internet access to all New Yorkers, regardless of income or location. In addition to free Wi-Fi, the kiosks provide emergency call access and wayfinding information, contributing to public safety and convenience.
LinkNYC is managed by CityBridge, a consortium of companies including Intersection and Qualcomm. The project has undergone several phases, including upgrades to the kiosk hardware and software. While generally well-received, the program has faced some criticism regarding privacy concerns related to data collection and usage, as well as the initial use of the kiosks for extended web browsing. Subsequent updates and policy changes have addressed some of these concerns.
