Leicester is a city and unitary authority area in the East Midlands of England. It is the county town of Leicestershire and lies on the River Soar close to the National Forest.
History:
Leicester has a long and rich history, dating back to Roman times when it was known as Ratae Corieltauvorum, one of the largest settlements in Roman Britain. Following the Roman withdrawal, the city became part of the Kingdom of Mercia. Leicester played a significant role in the Norman Conquest and was recorded in the Domesday Book.
