L'Aiglon

L'Aiglon is a French word that translates to "The Eaglet" or "The Young Eagle." It is primarily used as a nickname for Napoléon François Joseph Charles Bonaparte (1811–1832), the only legitimate son of Napoleon I, Emperor of the French, and Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma.

The nickname carries significant symbolic weight, representing the potential inheritance of his father's vast empire and the continuation of the Bonapartist dynasty. However, "L'Aiglon" never actually ruled. After Napoleon I's final abdication, the young Napoleon was kept under Austrian control and was known by the Austrian title Duke of Reichstadt. He died young from tuberculosis.

The moniker "L'Aiglon" is also prominently associated with a play of the same name, L'Aiglon, written by Edmond Rostand in 1900. The play dramatizes the life of the Duke of Reichstadt, emphasizing his struggles with his legacy, his confinement, and his unfulfilled potential. Rostand's play significantly popularized the nickname and solidified its association with the tragic figure of Napoleon's son.
