Kozhukh

A kozhukh (Ukrainian: кожух; Russian: кожух) is a type of sheepskin coat, a traditional winter garment originating in Ukraine and Russia. It is characterized by being made entirely from sheepskin, with the wool facing inwards for warmth and the leather side often decorated with embroidery, appliqué, or other ornamental designs.

Kozhukhy vary in length, from short jackets to full-length coats reaching the ankles. The style, decoration, and construction techniques vary regionally, reflecting local traditions and availability of materials. They are historically associated with rural communities and peasant populations, valued for their practicality and ability to provide protection against harsh winter weather.

While traditionally a practical garment, the kozhukh also held cultural significance. The level of decoration could indicate the wearer's status or wealth. Kozhukhy were sometimes part of a traditional dowry and worn for special occasions.

Modern kozhukhy, or variations inspired by the traditional design, are still produced and worn today, though often using updated materials and manufacturing techniques. They can be found in both practical and fashion contexts.
