King of the Road (skateboarding)
King of the Road (KOTR) is a skateboarding competition and video series produced by Thrasher magazine. It is considered one of the most challenging and prestigious contests in skateboarding.
Each year, Thrasher invites several professional skateboarding teams to participate. The teams are given a list of challenges, both skateboarding-related and otherwise, which they must complete within a set period, usually two weeks. These challenges often involve difficult tricks, skating obscure or dangerous spots, and performing bizarre or humorous stunts. Teams document their progress through video footage and photos, which are then submitted to Thrasher.
The winning team is determined by the number and difficulty of the challenges successfully completed, judged by Thrasher editors. Teams earn points for each completed challenge. The entire process is documented in a multi-episode video series that showcases the skaters' skills, creativity, and camaraderie, often emphasizing the chaotic and unpredictable nature of the competition.
KOTR is known for its raw, unfiltered portrayal of skateboarding and its culture, distinguishing itself from other skateboarding contests that focus primarily on technical skill. It highlights the adventurous and sometimes reckless spirit of skateboarding, emphasizing the fun and absurdity that can be found in the pursuit of the sport. The event has significantly impacted skateboarding culture, influencing fashion, trick selection, and overall approach to skating. The popularity of the video series has also launched and boosted the careers of many professional skateboarders.
