Karl Schmid (athlete)
Karl Schmid (born January 27, 1986) is a Swiss-American professional baseball pitcher. He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Oakland Athletics and the Atlanta Braves.
Schmid was born in Zurich, Switzerland, and moved to the United States at a young age. He attended Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, California, and was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 38th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft but did not sign. He played college baseball at Menlo College.
He was later drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the sixth round of the 2008 MLB draft. After several years in the Dodgers' minor league system, he was traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2018. He made his MLB debut with the Athletics on September 12, 2018.
In 2019, Schmid signed with the Atlanta Braves. He pitched for the Braves in 2019 and 2020.
Schmid is known for his fastball and slider combination.
