Kanthi mala

A Kanthi mala, also spelled कंठी माला, is a type of Hindu prayer necklace, often made of Tulsi (holy basil) or Rudraksha beads. It is typically worn around the neck, hence the name "kanthi" which relates to the throat or neck. The mala consists of a string of beads, traditionally 108 in number (though shorter versions exist), plus a "guru bead" which signifies the completion of the cycle and is not counted when reciting mantras.

The Kanthi mala serves as a tool for japa (mantra repetition) and is considered a sacred object. Devotees use it to keep track of the number of times they recite a mantra, often dedicating each repetition to a specific deity. Beyond its practical function in japa, wearing a Kanthi mala is believed to offer spiritual protection and purify the mind. Different types of beads are associated with different deities and purposes. For example, Tulsi beads are associated with Vishnu and Krishna worship, while Rudraksha beads are associated with Shiva worship.

The wearing of a Kanthi mala signifies a commitment to spiritual practice and devotion. The mala is usually handled with respect and is often kept in a clean and sacred place when not in use. Different traditions may have specific rules or customs regarding the wearing and handling of the Kanthi mala.
