Kan (tribe)
The Kan were an indigenous tribe located in southwestern Cameroon, specifically in the Littoral Region. They are considered part of the larger Sawabantu group, which encompasses several related ethnic groups in the area. Historically, the Kan engaged in agriculture and fishing, and their traditional social structure was based on kinship and village communities. Oral traditions formed a significant part of their cultural heritage, passing down stories, beliefs, and historical accounts through generations. The Kan language is related to other Bantu languages spoken in the region. Like many indigenous groups in Cameroon, the Kan have experienced social and economic changes as a result of modernization and interaction with larger society. Further research is needed to fully document their current population size, specific cultural practices, and challenges they face.
