Joseph Somes (Hull MP)

Joseph Somes (1788-1863) was a British shipowner, businessman, and Member of Parliament for Kingston upon Hull (Hull) from 1847 to 1852. He was one of the largest shipowners in the world during the mid-19th century, operating a substantial fleet engaged in trade routes across the globe, particularly with Australia and India.

Somes's shipping empire was instrumental in transporting convicts to Australia and played a significant role in the early development of colonial trade. He acquired many ships previously owned by the British East India Company, expanding his already substantial fleet. His business activities extended beyond shipping to include interests in shipbuilding and other related industries.

As a Member of Parliament, Somes largely represented the interests of the shipping industry and the mercantile community of Hull. He was a Conservative politician. His political career was comparatively short, but he wielded considerable influence due to his economic power and position within the maritime sector. His legacy is complex, marked by both his contribution to British trade and his involvement in the transportation of convicts and colonial commerce.
