John Phillips (artist)
John Phillips was a British artist, primarily a portrait painter, active during the Victorian era. Born in 1817 in London and died in 1867, he was often referred to as "Phillips of Spain" due to his extensive travels and paintings depicting Spanish life and culture. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and gained significant recognition for his works portraying the people and customs of Spain. His paintings, which include subjects like Spanish gypsies, peasants, and bullfights, are characterized by their vibrant colours, realistic detail, and sympathetic portrayal of his subjects. Phillips was a member of the Royal Academy and his works are held in various public and private collections.
