The Silver Chair (1990 TV serial)
The Silver Chair is a BBC television serial adaptation of C.S. Lewis's novel The Silver Chair, the fourth book in The Chronicles of Narnia series. It was broadcast in six episodes in 1990 as part of the BBC's ongoing adaptation of the Narnia books.
The serial stars David Thwaites as Eustace Scrubb, Camilla Power as Jill Pole, and Tom Baker as Puddleglum the Marsh-wiggle. The story follows Eustace and Jill as they are summoned to Narnia by Aslan and tasked with finding Prince Rilian, the missing son of King Caspian X. Their journey takes them to the wild lands north of Narnia, where they encounter giants, and eventually leads them to the underworld realm ruled by the mysterious and powerful Green Lady, who holds Rilian captive under a spell.
The adaptation faced challenges in bringing the fantastical elements of the book to the screen with the technology available at the time. It is generally considered less successful than the earlier BBC Narnia adaptations, particularly The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian, and received mixed reviews. Critics cited issues with the special effects, pacing, and faithfulness to the source material. However, Tom Baker's portrayal of Puddleglum is often praised as a highlight of the production.
The serial has been released on VHS and DVD. It remains a significant, albeit imperfect, attempt to bring this installment of The Chronicles of Narnia to a wider audience.
