John J. O'Connor (journalist)

John J. O'Connor (1933 – 2009) was an American television critic and journalist who wrote for The New York Times for nearly three decades. He was known for his insightful and often critical reviews of television programs, covering a wide range of genres from dramas and comedies to documentaries and news broadcasts.

O'Connor's work contributed significantly to the development of television criticism as a serious form of cultural analysis. He didn't shy away from expressing his opinions, both positive and negative, and his reviews were often influential in shaping public perception of television programming. He examined television not only as entertainment but also as a reflection of American society and its values.

Before joining The New York Times, O'Connor worked for The Wall Street Journal. He also authored several books, including a biography of Orson Welles titled The Road to Xanadu. His writings are considered valuable resources for understanding the history and evolution of television in the United States.
