Ellis Griffith (priest)

Ellis Griffith (died 1637) was a Welsh Anglican priest and translator. He is primarily known for his translation work on the Welsh Bible, specifically contributing to the revised edition of 1620.

Life and Career: Griffith served as the vicar of Pentraeth, Anglesey. While details of his early life and education are scarce, his involvement in the translation of the Bible suggests a high level of literacy and proficiency in both Welsh and Greek (and likely Hebrew).

Contribution to the Welsh Bible: Griffith was one of several scholars tasked with revising William Morgan's 1588 translation of the Bible into Welsh. Bishop Richard Parry led this project, and Griffith, alongside John Davies of Mallwyd, made significant contributions. The revised edition, published in 1620, built upon Morgan's groundbreaking work, aiming for greater accuracy and readability. Griffith’s specific contributions are difficult to pinpoint with absolute certainty, but his role in the revision process is well-documented. The 1620 Bible became a cornerstone of Welsh culture and language, playing a crucial role in preserving and promoting literacy in the Welsh language.

Death: Ellis Griffith died in 1637. His legacy rests primarily on his contribution to the 1620 edition of the Welsh Bible.
