John Hopton (died 1478)

John Hopton (died 1478) was an English knight, landowner, and administrator, primarily associated with the county of Suffolk. He held significant estates and played a prominent role in local affairs during the reigns of Henry VI and Edward IV.

Hopton was the son of John Hopton of Blythburgh, Suffolk and Margaret, daughter of John Savile. He inherited considerable land holdings, which he expanded through purchase and inheritance, consolidating his influence in the region.

He served in various administrative roles including Justice of the Peace for Suffolk on multiple occasions, as well as being appointed Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk in 1464 and 1469. These offices placed him at the forefront of law enforcement and royal administration in the region.

Hopton was knighted sometime before 1461. He was a supporter of the Yorkist cause during the Wars of the Roses, aligning himself with Edward IV after the deposition of Henry VI. This allegiance allowed him to maintain his position and influence after the Yorkist victory.

He married Margaret, the daughter of John Wentworth of North Elmsall, Yorkshire. Together they had several children, including a son, John Hopton, who succeeded him in his estates and continued the family's presence in Suffolk.

John Hopton died in 1478 and was buried at Blythburgh Priory. His will, dated 1477, provides further insight into his wealth, landholdings, and family relationships.
