Jim Hillyer (politician)
Jim Hillyer (May 22, 1974 – March 23, 2016) was a Canadian politician who served as the Member of Parliament for Medicine Hat—Cardston—Warner in Alberta from 2011 until his death in 2016. He was a member of the Conservative Party.
Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Hillyer was a rancher and farmer before entering politics. He was first elected to Parliament in the 2011 federal election, defeating Liberal incumbent LaVar Payne. He was re-elected in the 2015 federal election.
During his time in Parliament, Hillyer served on several committees, including the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security and the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs. He was known for his advocacy on issues related to agriculture, firearms rights, and fiscal conservatism.
Hillyer died suddenly of a heart attack in his parliamentary office on March 23, 2016. He was 41 years old. A by-election was held in October 2016 to fill the vacancy, which was won by Jim Walsh of the Conservative Party. Hillyer was survived by his wife, Livi, and their four children.
