James Salmon (architect, born 1873)

James Salmon (1873-1924) was a Scottish architect, primarily known for his work in Glasgow. He was the son of architect James Salmon (1805-1888) and the nephew of architect William Forrest Salmon (1843-1911).

Salmon trained at the Glasgow School of Art and established his own practice in 1896. His architectural style incorporated elements of Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, and Scottish Baronial. He often collaborated with architect John Gaff Gillespie, forming the partnership of Salmon & Gillespie.

Notable works attributed to James Salmon (sometimes jointly with Gillespie or his uncle) include:

  • The Hatrack Building (Union Street, Glasgow): A pioneering steel-framed structure clad in terracotta.
  • Lion Chambers (Hope Street, Glasgow): Another innovative design featuring reinforced concrete and distinctive detailing.
  • Moore Institute, Bridgeton.
  • Various tenement buildings and villas throughout Glasgow and the surrounding areas.

Salmon's work significantly contributed to the architectural landscape of Glasgow during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, showcasing a blend of modern materials and artistic expression. He died in 1924.
