James Archer (artist)

James Archer RSA (1823 – 1904) was a Scottish portrait and subject painter.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Archer was educated at the Royal High School and began his artistic studies at the Trustees' Academy under Sir William Allan. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1850 and a full member in 1858.

Archer's early work focused on historical and literary subjects, often depicting scenes from Scottish history and folklore. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite movement, evident in the detailed realism and vibrant colors of his paintings. His later work shifted towards portraiture, and he became a highly sought-after portrait painter, capturing the likenesses of many prominent figures of his time.

In 1862, Archer moved to London, where he established a successful career and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. He traveled extensively throughout his life, including visits to America, India, and Australia. These travels influenced his subject matter and artistic style.

He died in London in 1904. His works are held in numerous public and private collections, including the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery of Scotland.
