The constituency was named after Inkster Boulevard, a major thoroughfare running through the area, which in turn was named after the Inkster family, prominent settlers in the Red River Colony.
Inkster was consistently located in the northwest quadrant of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Over its history, it was generally considered a safe seat for the New Democratic Party (NDP).
Notable Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) for Inkster included:

- Don Scott (NDP, 1977-1988)
- Rosemary Vodrey (NDP, 1990-2003)
- Dave Chomiak (NDP, 2003-2019)
