Iglesia de San Emeterio (Sietes)
The Iglesia de San Emeterio is a Romanesque church located in Sietes, a village in the municipality of Caso, Asturias, Spain. It is a notable example of rural Romanesque architecture in the region.
The church is dedicated to Saint Emeterius, a Roman soldier martyred in the 3rd century. While the exact date of construction is debated, architectural features suggest it was built in the late 12th or early 13th century.
The building features a single nave with a semicircular apse. The exterior is primarily constructed of ashlar stone. Key architectural elements include the Romanesque doorway, characterized by its arched structure and decorative elements, as well as the windows, which are small and arched. The apse is typically decorated with blind arches and corbels.
Over the centuries, the Iglesia de San Emeterio has undergone some modifications and restorations, but it has retained much of its original Romanesque character. It is considered a valuable part of the architectural heritage of Asturias and a testament to the spread of Romanesque style into rural areas. The church is often visited by tourists and those interested in historical architecture.
