INS Magar
INS Magar (L20) was a Landing Ship Tank (LST) of the Magar-class in the Indian Navy. Commissioned on 18 July 1987, it was designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata. The ship was named after the Magar (crocodile) class of amphibious warfare vessels.
INS Magar played a crucial role in various naval operations and exercises throughout its service life, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations. It was capable of transporting troops, vehicles, and cargo, and landing them on hostile shores. The ship also participated in joint exercises with other navies, enhancing interoperability and maritime security.
Its primary function was to transport and land troops, equipment, and vehicles ashore. Key features included a large vehicle deck, accommodation for troops, and a well deck for amphibious landing craft. It also had a flight deck for helicopter operations.
INS Magar was decommissioned on 6 May 2023, after 36 years of service to the Indian Navy.
