Hope Historic District (Hope, New Jersey)

The Hope Historic District is a historic district encompassing the central portion of Hope Township in Warren County, New Jersey, United States. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The district is primarily significant for its well-preserved examples of vernacular architecture dating from the late 18th century to the early 20th century, reflecting the area's development from a Moravian communal settlement to a rural agricultural community.

The district's boundaries are largely defined by the original Moravian town plan. Key contributing properties include the Hope Moravian Church, the Gemeinhaus (Community House), numerous residences, barns, and commercial buildings along High Street (Route 519) and surrounding streets. The architectural styles represented include Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, and various vernacular interpretations. The district retains a high degree of architectural integrity, reflecting the historical character of the village.

The Moravian Church and Gemeinhaus, located prominently within the district, are particularly significant. The Church served as the center of religious life, while the Gemeinhaus originally housed various community functions, including living quarters, workshops, and a dining hall. The district's agricultural buildings, such as barns and sheds, speak to the area's continued dependence on farming.
