Hohenlohe (district)

The Hohenlohe district (German: Hohenlohekreis) is a Landkreis (district) in the north of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is named after the Hohenlohe region.

Geography

The Hohenlohe district is located in the Hohenlohe plain, a fertile agricultural area known for its mild climate. The Kocher and Jagst rivers flow through the district. It borders the districts of Heilbronn, Schwäbisch Hall, Main-Tauber and Neckar-Odenwald.

History

The Hohenlohe region was historically ruled by the Counts of Hohenlohe, who split into various lines. The district was created in 1973 as part of a district reform, merging the former districts of Künzelsau and Öhringen.

Coat of Arms

The coat of arms displays:

  • The upper part shows the banner of the Counts of Hohenlohe, with black and silver quarters.
  • The lower part shows a golden lion rampant (standing on its hind legs), symbolizing the County of Löwenstein, which formerly controlled part of the district.

Cities and Towns

The district consists of 16 municipalities, of which 7 are towns:

  • Forchtenberg
  • Ingelfingen
  • Krautheim
  • Künzelsau (capital)

Economy

The Hohenlohe district has a strong economy, primarily based on medium-sized industrial companies, particularly in the metalworking, automotive, and electrical engineering sectors. Agriculture, especially fruit growing and wine production, also plays a significant role.

Politics

The Landrat (district administrator) is the head of the district administration. The Kreistag (district council) is the elected representation of the district's population.

The Hohenlohe district attracts tourists with its scenic landscape, historic towns, vineyards, and opportunities for hiking and cycling. The Kocher-Jagst cycle path is a popular attraction.
