Heidrek

Heidrek is a legendary Gothic king appearing in several Old Norse texts, most notably Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks. He is a prominent figure known for his wisdom and participation in a famous riddle contest with Óðinn (Odin) disguised as Gestumblindi.

Heidrek's lineage is traced back to Odin, connecting him to other prominent Germanic heroes. He is typically depicted as a strong and capable ruler, though prone to making harsh judgments.

The Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks recounts Heidrek's life in detail, including his violent upbringing, his acquisition of the cursed sword Tyrfing, and the tragic consequences that follow its use. He eventually becomes king of Reidgotaland (associated with the Goths) and establishes a prosperous reign.

His death is usually attributed to treachery from his thralls during an expedition. The saga also details the subsequent battles fought by his sons, Angantyr and Hlöðr, for control of their inheritance, leading to a devastating war that symbolizes the decline of the Gothic kingdom.
