Hashem Khan (artist)
Hashem Khan (born 1941, Bikrampur, Dhaka) is a Bangladeshi artist, known primarily for his paintings depicting rural life and the Liberation War of Bangladesh. He is a prominent figure in the contemporary art scene of Bangladesh, recognized for his contributions as a painter, printmaker, and illustrator.
Khan graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts (now the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka) in 1961. His early works often featured realistic depictions of rural Bengal, emphasizing the simplicity and beauty of village life. He later shifted his focus to portraying the atrocities and struggles of the 1971 Liberation War, capturing the spirit of resistance and the suffering endured by the people.
Khan’s artistic style is characterized by bold lines, vibrant colors, and a distinct narrative quality. He often uses a combination of realism and abstraction to convey his messages. His works are held in numerous private and public collections, including the Bangladesh National Museum and the Shilpakala Academy.
Beyond his artistic practice, Hashem Khan is also a significant figure in art education and administration. He served as a professor and chairman of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka. He has also held positions in various art organizations and committees, contributing to the development and promotion of art in Bangladesh. He received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions to art and culture, including the Ekushey Padak, one of the highest civilian awards in Bangladesh.
