Hans Erni

Hans Erni (21 February 1909 – 21 March 2015) was a Swiss graphic designer, painter, lithographer, and sculptor. He was renowned for his contributions to graphic art, particularly his work for the Swiss National Bank and the International Olympic Committee.

Erni's artistic style evolved throughout his career, encompassing elements of Cubism, Surrealism, and abstract art, but he is best known for his figurative and allegorical depictions. His work often explored themes of humanity, nature, peace, and mythology. He aimed to create art that was accessible and conveyed universal messages.

Born in Lucerne, Switzerland, Erni studied art at the Kunstgewerbeschule Lucerne and later at the Académie Julian in Paris, as well as in Berlin. His early work reflected the influence of Constructivism and Bauhaus ideals. He later developed a more personal and humanist style.

Erni's commissions included murals for the Swiss Pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair in New York and for the Swiss National Bank. He also designed posters for the Olympic Games and the Red Cross, further establishing his international reputation.

The Hans Erni Museum, located in Lucerne, houses a comprehensive collection of his works, spanning his entire artistic career. The museum provides insight into his artistic development and the diverse themes he explored.

Erni remained active as an artist until his death at the age of 106. His prolific output and distinctive style cemented his position as one of Switzerland's most significant 20th-century artists.
