Gourgue

A gourgue is a term used in the Pyrenees region, primarily in France, to describe a deep, usually circular or funnel-shaped, pool or basin in a river or stream, often formed by the erosive action of water swirling around rocks or irregularities in the riverbed. Gourges are often found beneath waterfalls or in areas with strong currents and turbulent flow. They are typically deeper than the surrounding riverbed and can present hazards to swimmers and hikers due to strong currents and hidden depths. The term can also sometimes refer to a natural pothole eroded into rock by water action, even if not directly associated with a flowing river.
