Giuseppe Giulietti (trade unionist)

Giuseppe Giulietti (1879-1953) was an Italian trade unionist and politician, notable for his leadership within the seafaring and dockworkers' unions. He played a significant role in the early Italian labor movement.

Born in Genoa, Giulietti became involved in labor activism at a young age, focusing on the rights of maritime workers. He was a prominent figure in the Federazione Italiana dei Lavoratori del Mare (FILM), the Italian Federation of Maritime Workers, serving as its general secretary for a significant period.

Giulietti advocated for improved working conditions, fair wages, and social protections for sailors and dockworkers, often leading strikes and negotiations with employers. His activities often brought him into conflict with the authorities and employers, leading to periods of arrest and imprisonment.

Beyond his union work, Giulietti was also involved in socialist politics. He was elected as a member of parliament (deputy) representing Livorno and later Genoa. He was an outspoken critic of fascism and was forced into exile during the fascist regime, living in various countries including France and Tunisia. During this period, he continued to organize and support anti-fascist resistance movements.

After the fall of fascism in Italy, Giulietti returned and resumed his activities in the labor movement. He continued to advocate for workers' rights and participated in the rebuilding of the Italian trade union movement in the postwar era. He is remembered as a significant figure in the history of Italian labor activism and a staunch defender of the rights of maritime workers.
