James Townsend (British politician)

James Townsend (born 1737, died 1787) was a British politician who served as a Member of Parliament (MP).

Townsend was elected to the House of Commons for Calne in 1767, a seat he held until 1774. He later represented West Looe from 1774 to 1780.

His political affiliations were generally aligned with the Whig party. He was known to be a supporter of the Rockingham Whigs and associated with figures advocating for parliamentary reform and greater accountability. Townsend's career was marked by his involvement in debates concerning American affairs and domestic policy.
