Giovanni Gaetano Orsini (died 1335)
Giovanni Gaetano Orsini (died 1335) was a Roman nobleman and cardinal of the Catholic Church. He belonged to the powerful Orsini family, a prominent lineage in Roman politics and ecclesiastical affairs. He was the nephew of Pope Nicholas III, also an Orsini.
Orsini was appointed cardinal deacon of San Giorgio in Velabro in 1316 by Pope John XXII. He played a significant role in the Avignon papacy, particularly in the management of papal affairs and the administration of Rome, even while the papacy resided in Avignon. He frequently acted as a papal legate and was entrusted with diplomatic missions.
During his time as cardinal, Orsini was involved in various political machinations and power struggles within Rome. The Orsini family was frequently in conflict with other noble families, particularly the Colonna, and Giovanni Gaetano Orsini's career was intertwined with these rivalries.
He died in 1335. His cardinalate spanned a period of significant political and religious change, and he was a notable figure in the history of the Avignon papacy and the Orsini family.
