Ghare Baire (film)
Ghare Baire (ঘরে বাইরে), also known as The Home and the World, is a 1984 Indian Bengali-language film directed by Satyajit Ray. It is based on Rabindranath Tagore's 1916 novel of the same name. The film is set in 1908, during the Swadeshi movement in Bengal.
The film explores the themes of nationalism, love, and betrayal through the story of Bimala, a young woman who is drawn into the political fervor of the Swadeshi movement by her husband's friend, Sandip. Bimala's husband, Nikhil, is a liberal and progressive landowner who encourages his wife to become more involved in the world outside their home. However, Bimala's growing attraction to Sandip and his fiery rhetoric creates conflict and ultimately leads to tragedy.
The film stars Soumitra Chatterjee as Nikhil, Victor Banerjee as Sandip, and Swatilekha Chatterjee as Bimala. Ghare Baire is considered a significant work in Ray's filmography and a notable adaptation of Tagore's novel. It received critical acclaim for its performances, direction, and exploration of complex social and political issues. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1985.
