Gallipoli (album)
Gallipoli is the fifth studio album by Australian indie folk band Beirut, released on February 1, 2019, by 4AD. The album is named after the Italian town of Gallipoli, Apulia, where bandleader Zach Condon wrote much of the album's material.
Background and Recording:
Condon began writing Gallipoli in the winter of 2016. He initially struggled to find direction for the album. A breakthrough came when Condon acquired a Farfisa organ, which he found in southern Italy. He found the organ's sound inspiring, leading him to write the album's title track in Gallipoli. Recording took place in various locations, including a studio in Berlin, a farmhouse in rural Italy, and Condon's home studio in New York City.
Musical Style and Themes:
Gallipoli continues Beirut's signature sound, blending Balkan folk melodies with indie pop sensibilities. The album features a prominent use of brass instruments, layered vocals, and Condon's distinctive trumpet playing. Lyrically, the album explores themes of isolation, longing, and the search for meaning. Condon has described the album as a reflection of his personal struggles and a quest for connection.
