Lone Survivor (book)

Lone Survivor is a non-fiction, autobiographical book written by former United States Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, with assistance from Patrick Robinson, and published in 2007. The book recounts Luttrell's experiences as the sole survivor of Operation Red Wings, a failed counter-insurgent mission in the Pech District of the Kunar Province, Afghanistan, in 2005.

The book details the planning and execution of Operation Red Wings, which involved a four-man SEAL team tasked with locating and neutralizing a high-value Taliban target, Ahmad Shah. The narrative describes the team's ambush by Taliban forces, the ensuing firefight, and the deaths of Luttrell's three teammates: Michael P. Murphy, Danny Dietz, and Matthew Axelson.

Lone Survivor also covers Luttrell's struggles to survive after being separated from his team, his injuries, and his eventual rescue by local Pashtun villagers who adhered to the Pashtunwali code of honor and provided him sanctuary. The book is known for its detailed accounts of combat, its tributes to fallen comrades, and its exploration of themes such as courage, sacrifice, and the complexities of warfare. It has been the subject of both praise and controversy, with some questioning the accuracy of certain details presented in the book. A film adaptation of the same name, starring Mark Wahlberg as Luttrell, was released in 2013.
