Galina Shamrai
Galina Shamrai (born 1931) was a Soviet and Ukrainian horticulturalist and botanist specializing in the study of Allium species. Her research focused on the taxonomy, morphology, and distribution of wild and cultivated garlics and onions, particularly those found in the former Soviet Union. She made significant contributions to the understanding of Allium biodiversity and identified several new species and varieties. Shamrai's work is considered crucial for plant breeding and conservation efforts related to Allium crops. She is the author of numerous scientific publications, including comprehensive monographs and articles in botanical journals. Her collections and research are housed in botanical institutions in Ukraine.
