Funny Money (play)
Funny Money is a farce written by English playwright Ray Cooney. It premiered in 1994.
The play centers around Henry Perkins, an unassuming businessman who accidentally picks up the wrong briefcase on his way home from work. Inside, he discovers a large sum of money. Assuming it is criminal cash, Henry decides to flee the country with his wife, Jean, to Barcelona.
However, their plans are complicated by a series of increasingly chaotic events and misunderstandings. They are visited by friends, a police detective investigating Henry's supposed death (he was reported missing after the briefcase mix-up), and a second detective who suspects Henry of being involved in illegal activities.
As Henry and Jean attempt to keep their secret and escape the country, they become entangled in a web of lies and mistaken identities, leading to farcical situations and comedic misunderstandings. The humor of Funny Money relies heavily on physical comedy, fast-paced dialogue, and absurd scenarios. It is a popular choice for amateur and professional theater companies.
