Fudoki (novel)
Fudoki is a historical novel by Japanese author Kuni Sasaki. Published in 1928, it is a fictionalized account of the creation of the Fudoki, ancient reports commissioned by the Yamato court in the early 8th century (specifically 713 CE). The novel follows the lives of scholars and local officials tasked with compiling information about their respective provinces. It explores themes of history, folklore, bureaucracy, and the relationship between the central government and regional areas in early Japan. While not a direct translation or documentary retelling of the actual Fudoki reports, the novel draws inspiration from the content and historical context of these documents. The narrative focuses on the process of collecting local legends, geographical details, and agricultural practices, highlighting the challenges and personalities involved in the project. It offers a glimpse into the social and cultural landscape of Japan during the Nara period.
